Several women officials have been nominated as secretaries of municipal Party committees in different provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions across China since the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC), which was held in October last year.
Qiu Lixin
Qiu Lixin, deputy director of the Foreign Investment Department of the Ministry of Commerce, was appointed as secretary of the Party leadership group at Hubei Provincial Department of Commerce in 2016.
After the close of the 19th CPC National Congress, Qiu was nominated as deputy secretary of the CPC Huanggang Municipal Committee in central China's Hubei Province and acting mayor of the city.
In her inaugural speech, Qiu attached great importance to politics, learning, development, people's livelihood, unity and integrity. She said that she will devote herself to the grassroots development, take responsibilities and spare no effort to serve the people of Huanggang.
Qiu is the second female mayor in the history of Huanggang after Chen Anli, who is now secretary of the CPC Suizhou Municipal Committee, also in Hubei.
Chen Anli
Chen Anli, mayor of Huanggang from 2013 to 2016, was once head of the Education Department of Hubei. After leaving the post, Chen served as deputy director of Hubei Provincial Organization Department, director of the Human Resources and Social Security Department of Hubei Province, as well as secretary of the Party Leadership Group of Hubei Civil Service Administration.
As the Party secretary of the city of Suizhou, Chen worked together with Xi Yingcai, former mayor of Suizhou. Xi, 43, was the youngest prefecture-level mayor in China. He had previously served as the deputy director of the Secretariat of the General Office of the CPC Central Committee and the deputy mayor of Suizhou. Xi was nominated as mayor of Xiangyang in January, another prefecture-level city in Hubei.
Other Female Officials
Hou Hong is the only municipal Party secretary among the five women officials who received a promotion. Hou began her professional career in the system of the Communist Youth League Committee (CYLC) and served at many senior posts, including secretary of the CYLC Henan Provincial Committee, deputy secretary of Kaifeng Municipal Party Committee and director of Organization Department of Kaifeng Municipal Party Committee.
In her acceptance speech, Hou expressed her gratitude for the help and support of Kaifeng people and promised to serve them better.
Lei Jiankun, a Doctor of Philosophy, was previously a teacher in the Philosophy Department at the Central Party School and a researcher at the Institute for Applied Economy at Chinese Academy of Social Sciences from 2004 to 2006.
Lei was also deputy secretary and acting mayor of Yangquan Municipality in north China's Shanxi Province.
Guo Yanhong, general manager and board member of Beijing Urban Construction Group (BUCG), was nominated last year as mayor of Fangshan District in Beijing.
She joined the CPC in April 1987 and graduated with a master's degree in engineering from Hunan University.
As the holder of a postgraduate degree in engineering, Guo participated in many key projects of the BUCG and Beijing Construction Engineering Group, and worked as deputy general-manager, chief economic manager and investment director of the BUCG from 2015. Guo was also a delegate to the 19th CPC National Congress.
